GE PowerFlood® Meets Security Lighting Needs at Houston Port
|
| |
|
| |
GALENA PARK, TX.....When Williams Energy Partners LP purchased the
196-acre petroleum terminal on the Houston ship channel, they started
to upgrade electric service at this site.
|
| |
"During the second phase of the program, our consultant surveyed the
lighting from both a safety and security standpoint, " explained
Michael McDonald, area manager-Williams Energy Partners LP. "Based
on the survey results, they began to develop a concept for a lighting
upgrade for the site."
"Initial plans called for a combination of 175-watt metal halide lamps
mounted on 30 ft. poles. However, the lamps would be mounted on the
same plane as the security cameras, reducing the visibility of the
cameras. In addition, that design required too many poles and fixtures,
making the project very expensive."
Williams ultimately installed a General Electric PF-1000 PowerFlood®
lighting system incorporating 48 1000-watt high-pressure sodium lamps
ring-mounted on three 100 ft. galvanized high mast steel poles. Set
approximately 900 feet apart, the system provides two to 5 foot-candles
(average, maintained) depending on location and provides high visibility
on the docks, loading areas and storage areas.
"The system we installed offered the highest energy efficiency," noted
McDonald proudly. "We expect to save as much as $10,000 annually in
energy expenses, plus the system offers longer lamp life and the best
color rendition for the security cameras."
"Reaction from the employees, security force, boat pilots and government
agencies has been positive. We have applied for a federal Department of
Transportation grant to add eight more lamp/luminaire pole packages to the
site in the future."

CriterionTM from GE Lighting Systems Offers Safety And Security |
| |
Eliminates Light Spill For Georgia Transit Agency |
| |
|
|
| |
As part of the renovation project to create a headquarters annex for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), we had to design a new exterior lighting system to replace the 20+ year old high-pressure sodium lighting on the site.
|
| |
Our challenge was to use modern technology to create a safe, secure environment for employees and visitors, while at the same time minimizing 'spill light' on the adjacent luxury apartment complex.
This is how MARTA electrical engineer Ray Goodfellow, P.E. and Patrick Rush, P.E. explained the assignment they were handed as part of the renovation of the former bank data center for tenants which includes the MARTA Police Department.
The team selected 320 watt metal-halide lamps because they could provide the clean, white light needed for safety and security on the property. "Our studies showed 98 GE Lighting Systems' CriterionTM Luminaries, included 55 CFMX, 5 CCMX and 38 CVMX lighting fixtures, met tenant safety/security concerns and minimized 'light spill' on the apartment complex," Goodfellow said. "Plus variations of a single luminaire type allowed us to significantly reduce spare part inventory; a major cost savings."
The MARTA headquarter annex flood lights are mounted on 25ft. steel poles set on 50 ft. spacing; the other 43 GE luminares are mounted at various heights, depending on location. The system provides an average of 3.86 fc. (maintained).
These consistent, clear light levels help MARTA workers and visitors feel safer and more secure in their environment at night.
