    Roadway Lighting

Q:  What does the green lead to a roadway lighting fixture connect to?
The green power line lead connects to the green grounding hex-head and slotted screw positioned near the terminal block inside the luminaire.

Q:  I have a cycling high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp. What is the cause of this problem?
Cycling is an end-of-life characteristic of an HPS lamp. Chances are, you only need to replace the lamp and the cycling will stop. As long as the lamp cycles, the ignitor is working correctly. Also note that two manufacturers recently introduced non-cycling HPS lamps of 50 to 400 watts.

    Area & Decorative Lighting

Q:  Can I install a 1000-watt PF-1000 Powerflood floodlight upside down inside a power plant?
No. The ballast will overheat and shorten the life of the fixture.

  Q:  Can I operate a 250-watt HPS lamp in a 400-watt fixture?
Not a good idea. The 250-watt lamp will operate at 400 watts, shortening its life significantly.

    Industrial & Hazardous Location Lighting

Q:  Why can't I use Powr-Gard® luminaires with 400-watt metal halide lamps in a paint spray booth?
Before a lighting fixture can be installed in a potentially hazardous location, it must meet the luminaire operating temperature requirements of the UL844 Listing applicable to that installation. In the questioned instance, the exterior temperatures of the luminaire would be too high for a paint spray booth installation. The GE Lighting Systems Product Catalog -- GEA-12000G -- contains the temperature data that governs luminaire application as do the actual UL 844 documents.

Q:  I have a Multivolt lighting fixture. How do I wire it up for use with 480 volts?
You can't! Multivolt ballasted fixtures will operate on any of four line voltages -- 120, 208, 240, or 277 volts -- but not on 480 volts.
